The Venice Area Orchid Show

Doors open at 10:00 am for the orchid sales floor - Admission is
$5

Meanwhile the main display floor is closed to visitors until 11:00
while the judges choose special plants that may be given an award by
the AOS American Orchid Society. Judging begins about 8 am
|
|
|
|
All these orchid gifts are made from real orchids from all over
the world

On the sales floor the displays are packed with as many
orchids as possible.

This table of cut orchids arrangements is run by the
Venice Area Orchid Society www.vaos.org

Never really thought about having "cut orchids" in a vase before.
But the girls in the back just kept cutting and arranging all day long
and they seemed to be selling like hot cakes. They said depending
on the variety... that they could last a week or two. Interesting.

The judges finish their observations of all the plants on display

Interesting lizard friend that was headed for higher ground.
Owner said he was usually quite calm but could change colors when stressed.
|

The sales floor area opens at 10:00 am and everyone rushes in
to buy the perfect orchid.
|
|
|
And I found lots of happy shoppers :)

Joes Orchids was there selling some really beautiful pieces of
driftwood.

display orchids that are sometimes hard to find room for. www.myflowertower.com

The sales floor is still open but the display area does not open
until 11:00
|
|
|
|
Meanwhile... the judging begins in the back room where they take
one plant at a time and have groups of specialists examine them closely.
|
|
|
|
Every facet of the plant has to be recorded and compared to all
other similar plants that have been awarded before a new award can be given.
At the end of the day it's my job to photograph the winners,
|
|
|
|
Many of the selected plants must be taken outdoors to get the true
colors to show before they make a decision
|
|
|
|
While photographing one of the exotic blooms of this orchid, one
of the judges asked me if it was very difficult. I responded that
the orchids were very, very cooperative and would let me take as many photo's
as I wanted... HOWEVER... THEY LIKED TO PLAY TRICKS ON ME AND MY CAMERA.
Here is the example I showed him of how taking the same picture with
and without the flash totally changed the color of this orchid. Notice
the leaves really don't change at all. So which color is real?

While the judges judge and the crowd wonders the orchid displays...
I find time to take some great orchid photos.
