The show was held at the Venice Community Center in Venice Florida
on Saturday and Sunday February 4th and 5th 2012

Orchid growers from all over the area brought mountains of gorgeous orchids for the sale... and while most orchids do not have much of a scent... when you put a few thousand of them in one room... is smells WONDERFUL :)

And I roamed the area before the show began and tried to
capture some of the beauty of these amazing displays

And the beauty of some of the growers :)

As they were setting up their displays, I went around and photographed some of the most beautiful blooms that would be leaving the show and headed to their new homes when they opened the doors at 10:00a.m.

Meanwhile... out on the main floor, the judges all gather to discuss the possibility of finding some "special" orchids that could win a prize from the American Orchid Society.

Each of these 100 sq ft displays is packed with orchids of every variety

And its up to the judges to hunt through them looking for
the "special" quality that could win them a listing is the
American Orchid Society catalog.

The doors opened at 10:00, but the judges have until 11:00 to make their decisions. I worked around them to capture some of the most beautiful images I could find hiding amongst the giant displays.

When they open the display area to the public, the judges retire to a back room and discuss the plants that had any special qualities. They are compared to books and internet photo's from all over the country to see
if they are somehow "special" enough to be awarded a prize.


Meanwhile the displays are overrun with photographers	With everything from pro cameras to cell phones

Interesting artwork they use to set the mood in some displays

They always serve a great lunch for the participants

The show winds on and about 1:00 in the afternoon I'm hailed
by one of the judges to photograph some of the AOS winners.

These photographs must be taken immediately after the award is given to be sure to capture the uniqueness that they were judged upon... and before any of the flowers fall off :) This year there were 3 winners.
