Raffle Benefit
in Englewood Florida

The Missy and Bob Christie Raffle Benefit was held at the Cedar Point Environmental Park on Placida Road in Englewood Florida on Saturday October 22, 2011.

I only knew Missy from bumping into her at all the nature events that I cover each year. She had a distinctive smile and laugh
and was always happy to see you. I remember her as a true nature lover who loved being outdoors. I really liked that :)

From her good friend Bobbi Rodgers at the Cedar Point Environmental Park:

Missy Christie Died of breast cancer. She was originally from New Hampshire. Got her Masters in Child Psychology &
worked in that field up there till she moved to Florida about 8 years ago. She started working with Charlotte County Parks
and Natural Resources part time but then got hired full time working with sea turtles and shorebirds.

She was President of the Venice Audubon Society & was an avid birder. She would drive you crazy on a hike cuz you had to stop at every bird and/or bird sound coming from every tree! She was secretary of the Mangrove Chapter of the FL Native Plant Society. Unfortunately, she had to give up both of those roles when she got sick.

She had a husband, Bob, 2 daughters, 1 grand daughter and a dog, Lilly. She trained Lilly to become a very nicely behaved pooch…she was a really shy rescue dog but Missy taught her to be really friendly…they loved kayaking together! Missy was also very optimistic & positive, which is why everyone loved her. To her, her illness was, “…a little bump in the road…”.
I don't think she ever thought that she would actually die from it. :(

Her friends all met at Cedar Point to have this raffle and pot luck brunch to raise some money to help the family deal with their loss. Below are photo's from that event.

Outside in the parking lot Centennial Bank was serving hot dogs and drinks and inside there was a grande assortment of food from cocktail shrimp to home made brownies all donated by Missy's friends.

Inside you were met by Bobbi Rodgers who was selling raffle tickets
and encouraging people to sign up for the great prizes in the silent auction.

There were quite a variety of Raffle prizes to choose from

There were lots of Gift Certificates

And other cool items to win

A quick walk outdoors netted me these
nice outdoor portraits of some of her friends

The butterfly garden always has some beautiful visitors

And the Florida State butterfly - The Zebra Longwing - This is not a perfect example because both his wings are broken on the tips

How about a cup of wild coffee ? Easy to grow here in Florida.

Indoors the auctions were starting so I thought I'd
take some pictures of the winners.

A basket of pink flowers being held by Lynette Auger, program assistant from Charlotte County Parks and Natural Resources. Lynette worked closely with Missy and made this incredible photo montage of pictures of her enjoying her life. Again. A larger version is available on request.

My friend Marie won this basket of cheer

And I won this brand new cypress bat house. While most people are afraid of bats... they are one of the best little mammals to have around if you don't like insects. A small family of bats can easily keep your yard bug free. :) Cedar point has them for sale if you're interested in having one.

The Cedar Point Environmental Park has lots of interesting things to see and do. You might guess that this is an alligator skull...

But do you know what this is? While it may look like a Saber Tooth Tiger... it is actually the skull of a manatee. (I don't know what that long thing in its mouth is :) The park has lots of interesting things to see and learn including many different indoor programs and outdoor guided nature walks for all ages.
