Interesting story about this Marina. When I first came to
this town I was living on this beautiful Whitcraft Houseboat that I had
just completely refurbished inside and out.
She was 45' long, and 12' wide... with 2 bedroom 1 bath, 3 sun decks,
550 hp twin Chrysler inboards with V-drives... so she only needed 3 1/2
feet of water to travel.
And she ran a full 33 mph when she got up on plane.
Full galley, regular sized fridge. Onan Generator... nice main
salon with steering controls inside and on the top deck. I lived
on this boat for 6 1/2 years and cruised all over Florida including the
entire length of the Okeechobee waterway. Cool ride if you ever find
the time.
I was living at Ft Myers Beach when I met a girl who told me about this
place they were going to build called Cape Haze Yacht & Beach Club
in Placida... and told me she could get me a really good price on docking
there. So I came for a visit. What I found was that they had
not yet built the condo's that now surround the marina. But they
had built the brand new clubhouse and pool and spa area... but the marina
itself was not yet open.
So as it worked out... I lived on this boat at this marina for about
2 years before they started building all the condos there. The entire
place was fenced in, and I think there were only three people with the
key... and I was one of them. So I had that beautiful pool, hot tub,
clubhouse with wide screen TV and marina all to myself for about
two years !
I could be going out Gasparilla Pass or Stump Pass in 15 minutes or
Boca Grande Pass within an hour just taking my good ole time. And
I'd anchor out at Cayo Costa island for a few days at a time and lived
on fresh sea trout, redfish and snook every day. A crab trap hanging
over the side for the fish remains and fresh blue crabs anytime.
Set a lantern on the dive platform at night and net a half a bucket
of shrimp in a few hours on the outgoing tide.
Why did I tell you all this. Guess because Cape Haze Marina changed
my life.
Finally sold the boat and settled here in Cape Haze myself.
It was an awesome adventure.
Thanks for listening
Robert
However...
I think if I was going to do it again...
